Prof. Lior Shapira is the Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Vice Dean for Education in the Hebrew University- Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem. He is a full-professor of Periodontology since 2004.
Prof. Shapira graduated from the Dental Faculty at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem in 1986, and achieved his specialty in Periodontology in 1990. Following a 2 year fellowship in the Eastman Dental Center (University of Rochester, NY), he completed his PhD thesis on the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases in Jerusalem.
Prof. Shapira has a long tracking record in dental research, throughout his career. His research is focused on the mechanisms of inflammation during periodontal and peri-implant infections. He published over 100 scientific papers (see attached list of publications), as well as many reviews. The research efforts are invested in understanding the phenomenon and mechanisms that occur in inflammatory cells in response to periodontal pathogens (particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis) and their products, in the cellular and molecular levels. The investigations are carried out in tissue culture models as well as animal models. Many MSc and 3 PhD students had graduated from his lab. The impact of his research work was acknowledged by several international awards, including Teva award (1996), Rizzo Award (IADR periodontal research group, 1999), as a finalist in the “Jaccard-EFP Research Price Competition” in 2000, Sunstar Award (Best article on perio-systemic connection, 2003) and finally the "Distinguish Scientist Award in Periodontal Research" of the IADR in 2009.
Currently Prof. Lior Shapira is serving at the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, the Journal of Periodontology, and the Journal of Osseointegration. He is a past member of the editorial board of the Journal of Dental Research for 5 years.
Society Professional Activities
Prof. Shapira served as a board member of the Israeli Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration between the years 1998-2002, and was the President of the Israeli Society in 2001.
Prof. Shapira has been a faculty member in the department of periodontology of the Hebrew University since 1994, and a full professor since 2004. During 1996-2000 he was a visiting professor at the Eastman Dental Center, Rochester NY. From 2000-2005 he served as the director of the Post-Graduate Program in Periodontology, and since 2006, as the chairman of the department of periodontology. In 2013, Prof. Shapira was appointed as Vice Dean for Education. In 2014 he was appointed to the Betty and D. Walter Cohen Chair in Clinical Periodontal Research.
EFP related activities
While serving as the Post-Graduate Director, the post-graduate program was approved by the EFP (first in Israel and 9th in Europe). Prof. Shapira is serving also as an Examiner of the EFP post-graduate programs. Prof. Shapira participated in several EFP workshops (taken place in Switzerland and Spain) as participant as well as a reviewer, and was an invited lecturer to EuroPerio for several times.
